W E D N E S D A Y , M A R C H 2 3 , 2 0 0 5Bush Playing Politics With SocialSecurity...Againby Michael in New York on 3/23/2005 03:06:00 PMWhat a shocker -- just as Bush's plan to dismantle SocialSecurity faces bleak poll numbers and cynicism from averagevoters around the country, Treasury Secretary John Snow andthe trustees for SS and Medicare suddenly decide to issue anew report saying the crisis is even worse than they feared.Yep, SS is going to start paying out more than it takes in come2017, instead of 2018 and the reserves (depleted by Bush) willrun out in 2041 instead of 2042.</p><p> One year is a tweak infar-future projections, not a dramatic new development.The NYT does say the trustees are "not entirely devoid ofpolitics." But was this report scheduled? How and why did thenumbers change (and not very dramatically)? Did newnumbers come to light or did they just add them up differentlyto force a headline about an increasing "crisis?"
