Newer PostOlder PostS A T U R D A Y , A U G U S T 2 0 , 2 0 0 5India Moving Closer To A Secular Democracyby Michael in New York on 8/20/2005 09:55:00 AMThe Supreme Court of India is ready to hear a case challengingthe legality of religious courts in one of the world's largestdemocracies.</p><p> Hopefully, it will consider them invalid and createone set of laws for all the people of India, regardless of theircaste or religion, one set of laws that treats everyone fairly.The case that sparked this review is a doozy:Under the Constitution, Islamic courts are permitted to ruleon such matters as marriage and divorce.</p><p> A council in aMuslim village in northern India used that power in June toorder [a] woman to move in with her father-in-law althoughhe was accused of raping her.</p><p> She was also ordered to treather husband as her son, effectively becoming the father-in-law's wife.</p><p> She refused, and the father-in-law wasarrested after rights groups protested.</p><p> The case has pittedconservative Muslims against Hindu nationalists andwomen's groups.Boy, no wonder the far right wants to impose a Taliban of its own inthe US -- you can get away with anything!
