W E D N E S D A Y , D E C E M B E R 0 1 , 2 0 0 4Science Under Attack In Bush's Americaby Michael in New York on 12/01/2004 11:35:00 AMIn the election year of 2002, Congress promised to invest inAmerica's future by doubling the budget for the NationalScience Foundation by 2007.</p><p> Instead, after getting back intooffice this time, they're cutting back.</p><p> It's long been considereda given that long-term economic growth is powered in part bybasic scientific research, the sort that the federal governmentis best positioned to support."The science foundation helped finance research that led toWeb browsers, like Internet Explorer and Netscape, and tosearch engines like Google.</p><p> Its research has producedadvances in fields from astronomy to zoology, includingweather forecasting, nanotechnology, highway safety andclimate change," according to the New York Times."At the University of Southern California, the foundation issupporting research on an artificial retina, to restore sight toblind people, and on silicon chips that could be implanted in thebrain to replace neurons damaged by disease or injury."But Congress just didn't have any money for it, right? They'rejust being responsible, right? So what did they manage tofund?
