New Novel Finds Diana Impersonator Solving Crime In ‘Princess of Las Vegas,’ a Diana Impersonator Faces Death and Family Dynamics.</p><p> MICHAEL GILTZ • MAY 3, 2024 In best-selling author Chris Bohjalian’s new thriller The Princess of Las Vegas, a Princess Diana impersonator at a run-down casino suddenly faces the murder of her boss plus a sister back in town with all the family baggage that entails. “The princess is fake.</p><p> The murders are real,” says the tagline.</p><p> Acclaim from the Wall Street Journal and others is strong, including the New York Times saying Bohjalian brings “a propulsive vitality and a sly humor to a surprisingly moving tale.” The Princess of Las Vegas by Chris Bohjalian ($29; Doubleday) Buy now on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Diana would surely relate to all the turmoil.</p><p> And Bohjalian’s been thinking a lot about her.</p><p> The writer behind successful novels like Midwives (a million plus seller and an Oprah pick) and The Flight Attendant (the basis for the hit TV series starring Kaley Cuoco), Bohjalian read the Diana biographies, saw the Broadway musical about her life–twice!–and wondered w hat Diana would be up to if she were alive today. “I think, among other things, she would be an Instagram star,” says Bohjalian. “She would be one of those unbelievably interesting Instagram inuenc ers.</p><p> And it wouldn't just be because she wore the perfect dress to the perfect Gala.</p><p> But because of whatever philanthropic or act of kindnes s she wanted to celebrate.</p><p> I believe she would use social networks to educ ate the world.” Related: How P rincess Diana’s Death Changed British Society The most challenging part of the novel wasn’t reimagining Diana, Princess of Wales.</p><p> After all, the main character isn’t Diana herself.</p><p> Princess Di Impersonator Solves Murders and Sibling Tension in Sin City “My character by design is a Diana impersonator,” says Bohjalian, “because I did not want to write a historical ction novel about Diana herself.</p><p> Because her ex-husband is still alive, her children are still alive, her grandc hildren are still alive.</p><p> I loved The Crown TV series.</p><p> But I'll be honest, I got really uncomfortable when all of a sudden, we got to the Diana era because it doesn't feel like historical recreation anymore.</p><p> It felt too soon.” So the hardest part wasn’t imagining Diana, it was coming up with a name for a new type of cryptocurrency he dubbed “futurium.” “I'm not exaggerating.</p><p> Easily the rst fteen or twenty names for my ctional cryptocurrency were already existing crypto currencies,” says Bohjalian.</p><p> Crypto is probably accepted at some casinos if you want to gamble the night away.</p><p> And if you’re going to have a Diana impersonator, where better than Las Vegas?
