I’ve arranged titles by genre or theme, so when you spot a title that speaks to you–like say a romance or mystery or fantasy novel–it will be grouped with other titles that might appeal to you as well.

It’s like strolling down the aisles of your favorite bookstore.

At every section, I’ve picked out two or three or four books you’ll love.

I’ve read them or know the author’s track record or you love them and have told me so or they’re getting great buzz.

In any case, they’re the books people will be talking about so at the very least you’ll want the skinny on them so you’ll be in the know, too.

So let’s get reading .

At the head of the Parade are…. e 35 Best New Book Releases is Month: August 2024 1. is Is Why We Lied by Karin Slaughter 2. e Murders In Great Diddling by Katarina Bivald 3.

Worst Case Scenario by T.J.

Newman Will Trent is back! No, we’re not talking about the red-hot TV series.

We’re talking about the ongoing thriller series by the acclaimed, best-selling writer Karin Slaughter.

If you only know the TV series, be aware: you will enjoy the books, but they are quite dierent in the details.

So either start from the beginning (they’re all really great) or just dive right in.

In This Is Why We Lied, Will Trent is on his honeymoon with medical examiner Sara Linton at a pricey mountain retreat.

A storm isolates the guests, someone is murdered and the idyllic honeymoon becomes a crime scene.

As with all of Slaughter’s work, the violence is real and has a genuine impact.

But here she’s also paying tribute to the “closed circle” mysteries made famous by Agatha Christie, where the suspects are limited to a handful of people and they all have a reason to kill the deceased.

It’s funny, shocking, moving and lled with the sort of believable, grounded but still surprising twists that make Slaughter a master of the genre.

Cozy? Hardly.

Great fun, with great depth.

You might need a break after This Is Why We Lied and Katarina Bivald is here to give it to you.

Her light-hearted mystery The Murders In Great Diddling is a hilarious spoof of all those Midsomer and Cabot Cove places where bodies pile up like rewood.

In this case, an unexpected murder nds the rather obeat folk of Great Diddling embracing their notoriety and launc hing a book and murder festival.

Of course, such an enterprise would greatly benet from more murders, wouldn’t it? Flight attendant turned blockbuster author T.J.

Newman is not resting on her laurels.

Newman proves her smash hits Falling and Drowning were just the beginning.

In a disaster-movie plot Irwin Allen would envy, Newman shows a pilot having a heart attack while ying a commercial airliner…which promptly crashes into a nuclear power plant.

Literally everything that goes wrong does precisely that in a nail-biter thriller determined to prove Newman can deliver in the air, underwater and on the ground too.

This Is Why We Lied by Karin Slaughter ($32; William Morrow) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org The Murders In Great Diddling by Katarina Bivald ($16.99; Poisoned Pen Press) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Worst Case Scenario by T.J.

Newman ($30; Little, Brown and Company) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Related: Th e 29 Best My stery, Thriller and True Crime Books of 2024… so Far 4.

By Any Other Name by Jodi Picoult 5. e re’s Nothing Wrong With Her by Kate Weinberg 6.

Burn by Peter Heller Three works of ction to beguile, amuse and disturb.

The acclaimed Jodi Picoult dives right into the did-Shakespeare-write-his- plays controversy with a novel that spans centuries.

In the 16th century, Emilia Bassano is forced into the role of mistress to the Lord Chamberlain.

It’s only advantage? This puts her close to the world of the theater she loves…and an actor named Will Shakespeare happy enough to take her money in exchange for posing as the author of her plays.

Centuries later, very little has changed since a descendent of Bassona is a young female playwright who nds her ambitions thwarted…until one of her plays is submitted to a festival under a male pseudonym.

When a man suers from a debilitating disease no one can diagnose, it’s usually given a fancy new name like “What The Hell Is This?” Syndrome.

When a woman suers the same, she’s hysterical.

In the sometimes hysterical (as in funny) novel There’s Nothing Wrong With Her, our heroine is struggling with a Long COVID-like illness she calls The Pit.

It’s nightmarish, but also funny as author Kate Weinberg captures the exquisite, cruel boredom of it all, even with hallucinations (like an Italian poet from the Renaissance who oers advice) and a new handsome upstairs neighbor who is awfully understanding.

Sarah Jessica Parker is a fan.

In a dystopian novel, the versatile and acclaimed author Peter Heller follows two men on their annual hunting trip in Maine where they really disconnec t from the world.

Gladly, since the country is convulsed with absurd talk of secession.

When they reemerge, all hell has broken loose with the US in the midst of some sort of complete collapse or civil war or who knows what.

The two men desperately try to gure out what’s happened and who–if anyone–they can trust.

By Any Other Name by Jodi Picoult ($30; Ballantine Books) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org There’s Nothing Wrong With Her by Kate Weinberg ($ 27; G.P.

Putnam’s Sons) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Burn by Peter Heller ($28; Knopf) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org 7. e Art of Power by Nancy Pelosi 8.

Billionaire, Nerd, Savior, King: Bill Gates and His Quest to Shape Our World by Anupreeta Das 9.

Christopher Isherwood Inside Out by Katherine Bucknell Three works that focus key gures in politics, business and the arts.

Nancy Pelosi shares her story as the rst woman to be Speaker of the House, though clearly we’ll have to wait for the paperback edition to hear about the maneuvering she did as President Biden faced the decision of a lifetime.

Anupreeta Das does a deep dive into Bill Gates, who has been a controversial software developer, a controversial monopolist and now a controversial philanthropist who believes he knows best when it comes to educ ation, the climate crisis, nuclear power and pretty much every other complicated issue facing the world.

Biographer Katherine Bucknell tackles the complex career and legacy of writer Christopher Isherwood, whose work led to the legendary musical Cabaret, among other achievements.

Author Edmund White–a brilliant novelist and author of a wildly acclaimed biography of Jean Genet–says this is the best biography he’s ever read! The Art of Power by Nancy Pelosi ($30; Simon & Schuster) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Billionaire , Nerd, Savior, King: Bill Gates and His Quest To Shape Our World by Anupreeta Das ($32; Avid Reader Press/S&S) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Christopher Isherwood Inside Out by Katherine Bucknell ($45; Farrar, Straus and Giroux) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org 10.

What’s Next: A Backstage Pass To “e West Wing” by Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack Remember when The West Wing was a thrilling look at what life working at the White House might be like? A this is how sausages are made, but it’s okay because the people making them are determined to use healthy ingredients and make the best damn sausages they can? Maybe Camelot will return.

But whether it does or not, What’s Next oers a complete look at the making of one of TV’s most acclaimed dramas.

What’s Next: A Backstage Pass To “The West Wing” by Melissa Fitzgerald and Mary McCormack ($35; Dutton) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org 11.

Scandalous Women by Gill Paul 12.

A Great Marriage by Frances Mayes 13. e Bonus by TL Swan Three books circle romance.

Fans of the romance novel will surely be intrigued by Scandalous Women, a behind the scenes look at the publishing world where new employee Nancy White is working with Jacqueline Susann on Valley of the Dolls, introduces her to Jackie Collins and dealing with dismissive male editors as White and the two soon-to-be legendary authors ght for their dreams.

Frances Mayes begins with a wedding-to-be, has it called o and captures the fallout when the only person who thinks it’s a good idea not to go through with it is the one who called it o.

No pressure: her grandm other enjoyed a famously marvelous marriage and literally wrote the book on how others could achieve the same.

The author of Under The Tuscan Sun does not disappoint, says the early buzz.

Sometimes you want romance in the form of owers and sweet endearm ents.

Sometimes you want a steamy romance like the one oered in The Bonus.

Grace is besotted with the physical perfection of her boss, but he’s such a sarcastic jerk she nally comes to her senses and quits.

He’s furious and won’t think of it, keeping Grace in his orbit the only way he can: by letting her be the boss.

Steamy, right? Scandalous Women by Gill Paul ($18.99; William Morrow Paperbacks) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org A Great Marriage by Frances Mayes ($30; Ballantine Books) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org The Bonus by TL Swan ($18.99; Arndell) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org 14.

House of Bone and Rain by Gabino Iglesias 15. e Dark We Know by Wen-yi Lee It’s not Halloween yet, but it’s never too early for novels that scare the heck out of you.

Award-winning author Gabino Iglesias covers horror for the New York Times, where he champions other horror writers.

So I’ll do the same for him.

In House of Bone and Rain, childhood friends in Puerto Rico make a pledge to avenge the murder of one of their moms.

The problem ? She was killed by people working for one of the most violent criminals on the island.

Plus, a hurricane approaches, bringing with it the malignant spirits that turns this bloody minded vow into a supernatural battle reecting the evil unleashed by any violence, even the righteous kind.

Critics make it sound like a cross between Don Winslow and Stephen King, which sounds good to me.

Wen-yi Lee’s novel The Dark We Know involves the horrors of small town life when you’re an odd bisexual teen who does not t in and never will.

Isadora Chang escaped to art school but is dragged back home by the promise of an inheritance from her late, abusive father.

What she nds is her one remaining friend in a battle against evil forces wrecking havoc on a place she never cared about anyway.

But Isadora won’t have to decide whether to challenge it or run, because it won’t let her go away again, not without a ght.

House of Bone and Rain by Gabino Iglesias ($29; Mulholland Books) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org The Dark We Know by Wen-yi Lee ($19.99; Zando–Gillian Flynn Books) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org 16.

Kent State: An American Tragedy by Brian VanDeMark 17.

Empresses of Seventh Avenue by Nancy MacDonell 18.

Hitler’s People by Richard J.

Evans The subtitle to Kent State says it all: An American Tragedy.

Writer Brian VanDeMark covers every angle of the day protesters against the Vietnam War were gunned down by the National Guard, a crystallizing moment and the end of the 1960s and its idealism.

Women are center stage in Empresses of Seventh Avenue.

It captures one of the more unexpected results of World War II.

Before the war, Paris fashion dominated the world both artistically and in many ways nancially.

American designers simply copied whatever happened rst in France.

But the German invasion of Paris brought that industry to a halt…and the women in the American fashion industry stepped up, embracing their chance to craft a uniquely American style suited to the moment, one that would come to take its rightful place on the world stage of fashion alongside their European counterparts.

Critics say Nancy MacDonell tells their story with verve.

Historian Richard J.

Evans is one of the world’s most renowned experts on modern German history, thanks to works like his acclaimed Third Reich trilogy.

With Hitler’s People, he zeroes in on a question people continually raise: who supported Hitler’s monstrous aims and why? He starts with the inner circle of Himmler and Goebbels and the like, but then burrows deep er into the lives and choices of people like schoolteacher Julius Streicher and director Leni Riefenstahl and on and on.

Who was “just” following orders and when is that ever an acceptable defense.

Evans takes the time to examine these cogs in the machine and see them as people with complicated lives, which makes their choices all the more disturbing.

Kent State: An American Tragedy by Brian VanDeMark ($35; W.W.

Norton and Company) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Empresses of Seventh Avenue by Nancy MacDonell ($32; St.

Martin’s Press) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Hitler’s People by Richard J.

Evans ($35; Penguin Press) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org 19. e Mercy of Gods by James S.A.

Corey 20. e re Is A Rio Grande In Heaven by Ruben Reyes Jr. 21.

A Darkness Returns by Raymond E.

Feist 22.

Zero Stars, Do Not Recomme nd by MJ Wassmer Four works of sci- and fantasy to please most anyone.

Fans of The Expanse are thrilled James S.A.

Corey launches a new Space Opera with the story of the remnants of humanity struggling to survive while being used as pawns in an intergalactic struggle.

You know, Space Opera! Author Ruben Reyes Jr.’s short story collection is pegged as “speculative ction,” which means he’s so good that mainstream critics who don’t normally cover sci- and fantasy want to claim Reyes as one of their own, so expect references to Kurt Vonnegut and JG Ballard and the inevitable "magic realis m" when they review this startlingly diverse range of tales.

Fantasy fans are ready to set sail with A Darkness Returns.

It launc hes the Dragonwar Saga, which links to his Firemane Saga and (of course) his Riftwar Cycle and if you know what that means, you’re probably already reading A Darkness Returns.

MJ Wassmer (to heck with periods after initials! So 20th century) oers up a wacky end- of-the-world dystopian tale laced with acidic humor.

It’s about a dude on an island resort when the sun explodes (oops!).

He’d prefer to just save himself yet the other guests are awfully desperate.

Still, what’s the point of being a hero when most of the world is kaput and no one will be able to ticker tape him even if he makes it out alive? Decisions, decisions.

The Mercy of Gods by James S.A.

Corey ($30; Orbit) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org There Is A Rio Grande In Heaven by Ruben Reyes Jr. ($27.39; Mariner Books) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org A Darkness Returns by Raymond E.

Feist ($32; Harper Voyager) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Zero Stars, Do Not Recommend by MJ Wassmer ($16.99; Sourcebooks Landm ark) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org 23. e Bookshop: A History o f the American Bookstore by Evan Friss If I know indep endent bookstores, you can expect to see this well reviewed history of the American bookstore front and center on display for the rest of the year.

How could they–or you, a booklover?–resist the story of people selling books, from Benjamin Franklin to Je Bezos.

Author Evan Friss tracks every type of seller, from the chains and superstores to indies, from antiquarians to people with tables on the sidewalk hawking to passers-by.

The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore by Evan Friss ($29.99; Viking) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org 24.

Ash’s Cabin by Jen Wang 25.

Gone by Jock 26.

Einstein in Kaaland by Ken Krimstein I don’t need to keep explaining or defending the graphic novel, do I? Three new releases cover the waterfront in terms of style and subject.

Ash’s Cabin captures a teen understandably worried by the climate crisis.

Less unders tanda ble is her decision to make like Thoreau and head deep into the woods, planning to discover a cabin built by her grandfather (maybe!) and if she can nd it, life a self-sucient life.

Sci- is the genre of the striking Gone, in which another kid–in this case, 13 year old Abi–stows away on a luxury space liner to escape dire poverty on her planet.

What could go wrong? And just to keep you on your toes, Einstein in Kaaland nds New Yorker magazine cartoonist Ken Krimstein capturing the year both Albert Einstein and Franz Kaa lived in Prague (in 1911-1912) as each stumbled their way towards breakthroughs that would revolutionize science and the arts.

See? Graphic novels can do anything.

Ash’s Cabin by Jen Wang ($17.99; First Second) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Gone by Jock ($30; DSTRLY Media) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Einstein in Kaaland by Ken Krimstein ($32; Bloomsbury Publishing) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org 27.

Why Animals Talk by Arik Kershenbaum 28.

Love Triangle: How Trigonometry S hapes e World by Ma Parker Zoologist Arik Kershenbaum answers the question of why animals talk.

I would have thought the only question was how do anim als talk, because why wouldn’t they talk if they could? But that’s why I’m not a zoologist, since the answers to both questions oer a fascinating glimpse into the ways anim als communicate and the meaning of what they say and the motivation for it all.

Apparently, breakthroughs have been made in recent decades , so it’s a lot more complicated than “bees dance to tell others where the pollen is located” we learned in school.

Love Triangle! Don’t get excited.

It’s not a naughty tell-all but a deep dive into how trigonometry shapes the world.

I’m already scared (numbers are not my friend) but author Matt Parker promises that triangles–and the trigonometry and geometry they make possible–are our friends, making possible everything from recording music to launching rockets to measuring tall buildings. (Okay, the last one I sort of get.) Like triangles, Parker says his book is approachable and useful and fun.

Why Animals Talk by Arik Kershenbaum ($30; Penguin Press) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Love Triangle: How Trigonometry Shapes The World by Matt Parker ($30; Riverhead Books) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org 29.

Sunderworld, V-01: e Extraordinary D isappointments of Leopold Berry by Ransom Riggs Ransom Riggs is the author of the hugely popular Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children books.

That began in 2011 and now for the rst time Riggs is launc hing a new fantasy series.

Underw orld Vol. 1 has the intriguing subtitle: The Extraordinary Disappointments of Leopold Berry.

In it, a grieving teenager becomes obsessed with VHS copies of an old 1990s TV series about the Sunderworld. (It’s very depressing to hear TV shows from the 1990s referred to as “old,” by the way.) Then he starts to see glimpses of Sunderworld everywhere and then it’s real and then it needs saving, but maybe he’s not the Chosen One to do so? That’s just the rst disappointment, apparently.

Sunderw orld, V-01: The Extraordinary Disappointments of Leopold Berry by Ransom Riggs ($21.99; Dutton Books For Young Readers) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Related: Th e 28 Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books of 2024…So Far 30.

Molly and the Bear: An Unlikely Pair by Bob Sco & Vicki Sco 31. e Swis: A Gallery O f Rogues by Beth Lincoln, illustrated by Claire Powell 32.

Lion Dancers by Cai Tse Three books for kids, but really, if they’re good you’ll enjoy them too.

Molly and the Bear is a full length spin-o of the comic strip “Bear With Me,” all about a little girl and her best friend, an easily frightened 800 lb bear.

The word adorable springs to mind.

The Swifts: A Gallery of Rogues is the second in a series about Shenanig an Swift.

In this adventure, she’s tracking down art thieves who stole a portrait from their family mansion.

It’s lled with witty wordplay for those still jonesing for a new adventure for the Baudelaire children from Lemony Snicket.

And another graphic novel called Lion Dancers tells about the Chinese traditions of lion and dragon dancing, a cool, competitive art form I’d never heard of either.

But it’s really about two friends who drift apart and then must learn to cooperate if they want to compete in the big upcoming tournament.

Molly and the Bear: An Unlikely Pair by Bob Scott & Vicki Scott ($14.99; Aladdin) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org The Swifts: A Gallery Of Rogues by Beth Lincoln, illustrated by Claire Powell ($17.99; Dutton Books For Young Readers) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Lion Dancers by Cai Tse ($13.99; Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers ) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org 33. e Dictionary S tory by Oliver Jeers and Sam Winston 34.

Skeletown: Mas. ¡Menos! Chaos ensues.

Skeletown: Mas. ¡Menos! Is a casually bilingual treat telling a story via just the words “mas” and “menos.” Kamau & Zuzu Find A Way is a quietly powerful story about a little girl and her grandm other who wake up on the moon, with no idea of how they got there.

Adults will grasp the implications of this dislocation but everyone will savor the imagery by Diana Ejaita showing how they weave a web of connec tion to home via song and story and scraps of cloth.

As with all good picture books, the illustrations work beautifully hand in hand with the words.

The Dictionary Story by Oliver Jeers and Sam Winston ($18.99; Candlew ick) Buy now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org Skeletown: Mas. ¡Menos!
