W E D N E S D A Y , M A R C H 0 2 , 2 0 0 5Alan Greenspan Decides To Do His Jobby Michael in New York on
3/02/2005 06:01:00 PMApparently, Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan decidedto brush up on Economics 101 since the last time he spoke toCongresss (and certainly since the election). Lo and behold,he's found religion and realized record deficits are NOT a goodthing. According to the New York Times,"Alan Greenspan, the Federal Reserve chairman, warnedtoday that federal budget deficits are "unsustainable" andurged Congress to consider both spending cuts and taxincreases as possible solutions.In his gloomiest assessment yet about the government'sbudget outlook, Mr. Greenspan warned that annualshortfalls were "unlikely to improve substantially in thecoming years unless major deficit-reducing actions aretaken."Of course, then he insisted his preference was for spending cuts andnot tax increases. Sure, irresponsible tax cuts that are weightedheavily towards the radically rich and do nothing to give a jolt to theeconomy must be sacrosanct, while programs like HeadStart andhealth care for veterans should be slashed to pieces. How aboutdeciding whether a particular recent, poorly thought out tax break forthe super-wealthy was actually a good idea before slaughteringhighway programs, education and Social Security?
