W E D N E S D A Y , M A R C H 0 2 , 2 0 0 5Bush's Plan To Tear Down Social Security?DOAby Michael in New York on
3/02/2005 03:39:00 AMYep, no less than Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said wemight have to wait a year before voting on the President's"plan" to restructure Social Security. And even then, it mightnot include the private accounts. So Bush's top priority on hisdomestic agenda is dead on arrival.Or at least in very serious trouble.Imagine. Bush said Social Security was in dire straits and aboutto go bankrupt. (He also said it would go bankrupt in ten yearsabout two decades ago.) He refused to ever give even a broad-stroked guide to how it might be restructured but insisted itwas vitally important. Then he insisted the only way to save itwas to create trillions in debt by creating private investmentaccounts where seniors would switch from guaranteed amountsto hoping the stock market would keep them out of poverty.Then Bush finally admitted that adding tons of risk and tons ofdebt by creating private accounts would do ABSOLUTELYNOTHING to make Social Security more solvent but we neededto do it anyway. And he still refused to give a detailed plan onhow to "rescue" SS. Then the media muckrakers behind thoselying Swift Boat ads tried to smear teh AARP by calling it progay marriage and anti-military. Then Republican leaders wenthome to their constituents and faced a s*** storm of angerand pointed questions.In other words, Bush used lies, deception, bait and switchtactics, attack ads and homophobia to push its agenda -- all ina bald-faced, hamfisted, clumsy, transparently mean-spiritedand patently untrue manner that flew in the face of logic andcommon sense. But this time it DIDN'T work.Someone explain to me why this time was different so we canmake sure it keeps happening again.
