M O N D A Y , S E P T E M B E R 1 3 , 2 0 0 4CIA Nominee Nails Bush (unintentionally)by Michael in New York on
9/13/2004 02:03:00 PMA pretty good NYT piece on Porter Goss, the nominee for head of CIA.It does a pretty good job of explaining why someone who wasfundamentally involved in the intelligence failure and has a consistentrecord of avoiding criticism of the CIA isn't the right man for the job.In this era of massive intelligence failures, Goss has headed theHouse Intelligence Committee and failed to conduct one investigationinto why these failures happened -- his last report was in 1998 andabout Iranian shipments to Bosnia. The article fails to detail why theappointment of a political operative like Goss endangers nationalsecurity -- Kerry would certainly have to dump him (Goss has usedhis post to attack Kerry, turning the important issue of nationalintelligence into partisan politics) and that would mean if Kerry winsthe CIA would be without a head for a good year or so right in themiddle of our war on terror. But here's the money quote. Goss was talking about weak intelligencefrom the CIA et al, but don't you love this?"I think the president has done very well with insufficientintelligence,'' Mr. Goss said late last year in an interview.I couldn't agree more.
